http://www.argan-oil.co.za/Argan Oil is oil that is highly valued for its cosmetic, medicinal and nutritive properties, it is produced from the kernels of the Argania Spinosa tree which is endemic to Morocco.
As the species Argania is unfortunately now endangered and under protection of UNESCO (even though it once covered North Africa), the women’s cooperative which produces all Argan Oil sold today, has established an ecosystem reforestation project to ensure a continued supply of Argan Oil, which remains one of the rarest oils in the world as it grows only in very specific areas. All profits from the sale of Argan oil by the cooperative is shared among the local women of the Berber tribe.

How is Argan Oil extracted? The Berber women sit on the floor and crack the nuts with rounded rocks on rough rectangular stones between their knees. In every smooth nut, one finds one to three kernels, which resemble sliced almonds. These kernels are extremely rich in oil and are then removed. It takes about 32 kilograms of fruit (which is roughly what one tree produces in a season) and several days to make only one litre of oil.
WHAT IS ECOCERT®? ECOCERT®, an internationally known organisation, is considered the most important organization which supplies “Organic Certifications” and its standards are very strict. ECOCERT® supervises the entire production - from the creation of formulas through the manufacturing, filling and packaging processes etc. ECOCERT® certification is only given after a lengthy and extremely thorough procedure. ECOCERT® demands from the company requesting certification a most respectful and serious attitude towards the consumers and products, as well as the environment, from an ideological point of view.
COMPOSITION OF ARGAN OIL
Argan Oil has a complex, rich and unique composition and it is due to the presence of various important biological components that traditionally Argan Oil has been used for a multitude of applications. Traditional uses of Argan Oil include skin, nail and hair care, the treatment of various dermatological conditions, massage and the curing of stretch marks.
BIOLOGICAL COMPONENTS IN ARGAN OIL:
Essential Fatty acids (EFAs) – Important for preventing the signs of premature ageing, essential fatty acids help to regulate and maintain healthy skin. Argan Oil contains levels of up to 80% EFAs in its total composition. The fatty acids in the Argan Oil have moisturising and antioxidant properties and are needed for the manufacture and repair of cell membranes.
Prostaglandins – promote cell growth and development and are anti-inflammatory. They are important in catalyzing many processes.
Vitamin E – This antioxidant and anti- free radical assists in maintaining the moisture levels in the skin, it protects the Vitamin A levels and EFAs in the body, it can act as a barrier against the aging of cells and promotes their nourishment. Vitamin E gives strength to capillary walls, is anti-inflammatory and has shown to be useful in the treatment of stretch marks and scarring from wounds.
Polyphenols – The phenolic compounds or polyphenols in Argan Oil are naturally components of most of the plants. These compounds are reputedly antioxidant, anti-ageing, antiseptic, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory.
Ferulic Acid – An important ingredient in many anti-aging mixtures, ferulic acid is the phenolic compound most abundantly present in Argan Oil. Ferulic acid is a very strong barrier against the damaging effects of UV (ultra violet) radiation due to its antioxidant potency, which increases dramatically upon exposure to ultra violet radiation.
Carotenoids – Said to be an effective barrier against arthritis and excellent for the maintenance of healthy skin, carotenoids cannot be manufactured by the human body. Caretenoids are naturally fat soluble and help to protect the skin from free radical reactivity and UV radiation.
Sterols – The primary component of the outermost layer of skin, sterols function like an optimal barrier as well as performing a host of other functions, such as reducing inflammation, improving moisture retention and skin metabolism processes as well as keeping the structural integrity of the cell membrane. The chemical structure of human sterols and plant sterols is very similar thus the sterols found in Argan Oil work beautifully well with human skin.
